Present waste disposal methods are land-filling, incineration, composting and anaerobic digestion. Among these options anaerobic digestion is energy efficient as well as environment friendly. But multitude of operational difficulties is associated with conventional anaerobic digesters and hence it did not receive much acceptance from users. Therefore, we are introducing a field tested, innovative world class high rate anaerobic digester for efficient and safe garbage disposal.

The realization has come at a slower pace but it is better late than never. Since nothing new can be created in this world and while existing energy sources are getting depleted at alarmingly rapid rate, we must use every available resource judiciously. There are enough natural agencies, which are too keen to help us in this endeavour. Science has revealed these tools and we must use their potential to achieve the urgent call of nature "CLEAN ENVIRONMENT FOR ALL, INCLUDING NATURE ITSELF".

Then what is biogas? It is a combustible gas mixture comprising around 60% methane and 40% carbon dioxide, that is formed when organic materials, such as animal (and human) dung or vegetable matter are broken down by microbiological activity at warm temperatures (30 – 40°C or 50 – 60°C) in an anaerobic environment, that is methanization.

Using bio-methanization technology all domestic bio waste can be treated hygienically and a very good cooking fuel is produced. This helps to prevent the tendency to throw the waste materials in roads and public places. Generation of cooking gas at house hold level helps to overcome fuel crisis to a great extent.

The easily degradable waste material is fed into the Biogas plant through the inlet chamber of the plant. This waste is converted into cooking gas with the help of a special type of anaerobic bacteria. The main component of the gas produced is methane which is a renewable source of energy.

The space required for a domestic plant (1 cum) is one square meter. Time required for the installation is 1- 4 hours, depending upon the model of the plant. The gas generated from the waste of a family of 3 -5 members is sufficient enough to work a single burner stove for more than 2 hrs. every day.

The return on investment of a domestic bio waste treatment - bio energy plant is also very good. A 1 Cum plant is sufficient to save the 70% - 90% consumption of fire wood or other cooking fuels every day. Within 2 years the entire investment will be got back as cooking gas and liquid fertilizer. The benefit from the methane emission reduction is another added advantage.

Bio digestion or anaerobic digestion (AD) is a biological process that occurs when organic matter is decomposed by bacteria in the absence of oxygen (i.e., anaerobic). As the bacteria decompose the organic matter, biogas is released and captured.

Biogas consists of approximately 60% methane and 40% carbon dioxide. The remaining by product is called Digestate and is low in odour and rich in nutrients. It contains valuable plant nutrients like nitrogen and potassium. Digestate can be used as a fertilizer and soil conditioner.

Anaerobic digestion has a defined process flow that consists of four distinct phases.

1. Pre-Treatment: In pre-treatment, wastes may be processed, separated, or mixed to ensure that they will decompose in the digester.

2. Digestion: During digestion, waste products are broken down by bacteria and biogas is produced and collected.

3. Biogas Processing: Biogas produced is either combusted or upgraded and then used to displace fossil fuels. During upgrading, scrubbers, membranes or other means are used to remove impurities and carbon dioxide (CO2) from biogas.

4. Reuse or disposal of solid digested waste: Digested waste has a high nutrient content and can be used as fertilizer so long as it is free of pathogens or toxins, or it can be composted to further enhance nutrient content.


Developed by CSIR-Indian Institute of Chemical Technology, Hyderabad based on extensive research funded by the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, Government of India, this innovative prefabricated Modular High Rate Digester ensures safe disposal of garbage. Convenient to install in apartments, hotels, resorts and other places of garbage accumulation. It can digest wastes without polluting the environment.

Modular Bio Digester is a high rate bio-digester developed for safe disposal of garbage.
